As I’ve said, I’m pretty bad at chess.

I’m far from qualified to comment too much …but take baby steps…learn from mistakes…it WILL get better 👍👍

As long as you plan through your moves, you should get better and better

I would say the best thing to do would be to take chess courses and do the lessons available on chess.com. However, I know it's a lot effort and takes a lot of time to do all these lessons and you're not even sure of the results you'll get. It would of course take some time for your concrete elo rating to go up. In my experience, I would say that simply playing a lot was the thing that helped me a lot. Recently, I've started playing chess a lot more, online and even IRL with some friends in my free time. Due to that, I gained (not sure of the number but anyway) 800 Blitz rating in three months trying to play at least 10 games a day. It took some time, but AT the end, m'y w/l raté kept improving as well as m'y elo, because I would win a lot more than usual and I could directly understand and correct my mistakes when I lost cause I would easily get a similar position in other games. So if you're not playing a lot, I think you can't get consistent and improving is a lot more difficult. I think it's one of the reasons most people (including myself before) stay under 1000 elo. Of course it's not the perfect solution and again, I only speak from my own experience, but still, try to play as much as you can and you will improve naturally without even knowing it and your rating would just go slowly up.

Hope it helps !

Btw sorry for all the ortographic mistakes, my french auto-corrector is kind of messing with me right now lol

Also try to study your games after, you'll find general mistakes in most of your games that you can correct, like not castling early enough or not putting your rooks on open files etc

Maybe play with coaches or bots here on chess.com, it can train you.

And not just that, make sure to do game reviews and study openings, middlegames and end games. Be sure to unwind once you’ve played many times online and probably play with your family and friends in real life.
