IHSA State Round 7: Rolling Meadows vs. York board 1

This is the final round of the IHSA State Tournament.  I ended up playing against the person who placed 7th last year.  Our team nearly got swept; I was the only person to win.  I was black.

I had an awesome year at state.  I won 6.5 points out of 7 and finished 6th at board 1.  I couldn't have asked for a much better way to finish my senior year.

Yeah, 32. Qa2 would have been better for white. After he went down the exchange though it would have been pretty difficult to come back. Amazing job at state. Going 6.5 is very hard to do and you beat some quality opponents.

Thanks Dan.  I'm sorry you didn't do as well as you did at Conference.  I'm going to join the USCF soon.  You me and Hiro should go to tournaments together.

Is this York HS in Elmhurst? When I attended, there was no chess team, only a few blokes that would play at lunch.

Yeah that's them.  They're pretty good now.  I was the only one on my team to win; we nearly got swept.

Nice games. Congrats on beating last year's board 1 champion and going undefeated this year.. Enjoyed playing those blitz with you and Mr. Mott, and yeah, hopefully we could all play in a USCF tournament soon.

I meant to ask if you had seen the pin (rook to queen) when you exchanged knights.  When you moved your bishop, it seemed like you either didn't expect it or didn't see it prior.  My guess is the former.

When you exchanged the first knight, I thought that was a little odd, as it should be used for protection on the fianchetto'ed side...but sitting back isn't your style!

I was a little concerned that his king would get behind your pawns, but without a knight, rook or queen, he wasn't going to be able to do anything with the pawns the way they were.

GG!

My plan after the knight exchange on e5 was originally Qg4.  I actually wrote it on my notation sheet and almost played it.  Luckily I saw the bishop before I touched the queen.
