I’m new here, and enjoy the bots. But I need to ask something.

I’ve been trying out several chess sites, trying to compare features, their interface, etc

I need to settle on a site to stick with and subscribe to, because being a senior citizen on social security I don’t really have money for multiple sites. So I’m “test driving” to see which site fits me the best and is the best bang for my Social security buck.

I like this site quite well, so far. It seems to offer several great features. I’ve been looking for something in the form of change in my chess life. See, for a very long time, I’m estimating over twenty years, I’ve played maybe three thousand or more games against my Novag Saphire portable hand held chess computer. It’s been a staunch companion. Never once failed me. Never refused a challenge from me. And the thing will easily whip your butt on the higher levels! Now mind you, I HAVE played games against humans. I don’t want to convey the wrong idea. I used to belong to a chess club in the big city back when I lived in S. Bend Indiana. But raising a family necessitated me moving to a smaller town, so I  fell back heavily on playing against my Saphire.

But the problem is the machine’s grown STALE for me. I need a change! I need something “new and different.”  Saphire seems same old same old.

So my solution was that I hit the Google button to find online chess sites. And here I am. I’ve played a few games here against the bots, and I’ve really enjoyed it! The bots are fun!

I’m comparing sites to see which features are offered so I can settle on a home site to subscribe to. I see that when you subscribe you get a lot more features / benefits. I think that goes for all online chess sites.

I mentioned interface. I really need to see how the different  sites harmonize with my little phone screen. A couple months ago, I had an I-pad. An I -pad with a big, beautiful, roomy screen. It was my closest companion for years! I loved that big screen! Senior citizens sometimes don’t have the greatest vision, and big screens are just perfect for our needs. But a couple months ago the I-pad took a dump on me! Screen went black and the they tell me it’s not repairable. Major pain!!!  Basically my whole LIFE was on that I-pad!!

So I need a site that’s easy to see and access the site features from this small screen of my I-phone.

Now I FINALLY come to the point of my post: (Sorry about the long introduction!)

I really like the feature on this site where after you finish a game it color highlights blunders, brilliant moves, mistakes, misses, etc. with those little colored icons. That’s awesome! My question is, if it says a given move is good or bad, well, that doesn’t help me much unless it would tell WHY it’s good or bad! (except in obvious cases.)

I’ve made moves that I thought were pretty darn good, but the review disagrees with that. But I don’t know WHY, and what it thinks would have been a better move and WHY. My philosophy is teach me, and I’ll LEARN. This old brain of mine is quite capable of learning a plethora of new things especially CHESS KNOWLEDGE before I kick the final bucket!

So if I SUBSCRIBE, will I get more detailed analysis, teaching me WHY certain moves are considered either good or bad?  That’s my main question. That’s why I’m posting.

Now if subscribing would unlock such a teaching feature that would truly make it worth me digging deeper into my scanty social security check!

Ok so this subject is kinda complicated. So if you do NOT have any paid subscription on chess.com you will get 1 game review per day which has all details the site offers. It will look a bit like this when you make a bad move: (it's a tiny bit different on mobile but its very similar)
Here my online bot chess coach explains why the move was bad and it was a "Miss" and I can click "Show Moves" and the site will show me the sequence of moves on the board that the coach is talking about. I can also click "Best" to see what was a better move or "Retry" if I want to try and find a better move myself. If you upgrade to the Platinum subscription to get more reviews, the coach will stop explaining the moves for the rest of the reviews (after the first) and if you upgrade to Diamond you will get unlimited fully detailed reviews. Here's a link to see what each subscription offers. (https://www.chess.com/membership)

This should answer all your questions but if you have more or don't understand something I said feel free to ask.

Thank you so much! I’ll check out the replies! My brain here at this midnight hour is shutting down for a few hours. I appreciate all the friendly help. I guess when you’re new to a site it takes a while to figure out the features, especially on this small screen. I sure do miss my big ol’ I-pad.

It's a new chess site offering multiplayer chess. You can even play against varying level bots at once. Give it a shot and see if it appeals to your interests.

It's a newer site so obviously not as polished/feature rich as lichess and chesscom but offers a new dynamic to the game imo.

As an older retired guy that plays mostly online, but does the chess.com puzzles on his phone, go to the supermarket and get a strong pair of readers.

You may also want to check out lichess.org. It is a very complete site with tons of features (though not nearly as many bots as chess.com), and it's totally free.
