Exactly!!This is the answer I was thinking of.

I have something else to say:when you have king and pawn versus king,just place the king in front of the pawn and continue like this.Your king will send away the opponent's king till your pawn promotes.

The black king can move his peice to the bottom left, and the pawn can be promoted to a queen. Then you can commit checkmate

 How? Black cannot lose in this position. Once he makes it to d8 the pawn covers both the squares to either side of the king. He cannot move left or right. White must move to the square behind the pawn or black just takes it. Either way it's a draw. White has no move that wins.

if its whites move he's winning! however, if white try to confuse black to move his king on the opposite side(white king), white could win. but with only three pieces on the board its unlikely.
