Is this the best defence against patzer?

Hello,

I am a low level player and at these low levels, I see endless patzer openings and attempted scholars mates. It seems to be the number one trap out there for noobs.

I had a dream run against someone pulling these tricks on me and was wondering if it was the best way to deal with these openings or traps or whatever you want to call them. Check out the game here: http://www.chess.com/livechess/game?id=412680472

Anyone know another way of dealing with this?

You handled that very well... For the most part. The first seven or so moves are pretty much perfect. Good job, especially on that 12...Bg4.

Well except for the blunder 11...Nxe4 allowing mate in one I'd say you handled it pretty much spot on.

To get out of the doldrums of facing these types of openings over and over you need to play higher rated players.  It will make you better and you won't be playing these types of openings as often.

didnt notice that mate, glad he didnt either :P

thanks a lot

On move 17th, wouldn't black do Kxf7 instead? Wouldn't change much but at least recover 3 points.

I think you mean Kxc2, but yes that would have technically been better, however black was down tremendous material at that point, so it wouldn't make a huge difference.
