Ne5 was my intended move when I quickly opted on Nxg5. My only hesitation was that it opened the h file.  There's no follow up.. in fact Black has Rxh2  followed by ...Ng4+,. ...Qh8 (of vice-versa)in his pocket if the opportunity knocks, but even speculative sacrifices can have merit in blitz - more so than in standard.

Thanks y'all.

And what is wrong with Ne5 immediately?

Not a thing. That's why it was my intended move.  The knight sack was a spur-of-the-moment decision (and, despite the result, a wrong one, as most such decisions are) to spice up the game.

i think the sacrificial move was based on hoping for luck that it would somehow open up the position to your advantage. there's many sacrifices that work and don't work. it's about fun chess rather than serious chess

I like this move, but I am personally someone who tries to hang on to every pawn I can have. I've been trying to break that habit.

GOP vs. Smail

Are you sure it wasn't GOP vs. Smile ?

@batgirl - Since you so much time on quality chess history research, in all the excitement I think you thought you were playing the Opera Game.

I would have played Ne4 since it is obvious that black should play ... Qc7 to Bxg5.
Of course in short time games with open diagonals and only one minor piece down the defender always blunders.
Is chess an art, science, sport or game.
Maybe gamble should be added to the list.
