Low-Ranked Analysis

This is a game I played on 8/21, (I think it was unrated, that's what I've mostly been doing) with another amateur. This is standard live, because I cannot stand blitz games. I would really appreciate the analysis of someone more experienced than myself. I feel like my rating should be higher, but my fundamentals are poor... I also hardly ever play rated games. Lately I've been winning my rated games with people rated similarly to me, though.

Again, thanks for taking a look. Please leave a comment with suggestions and critisizements. I think I missed a lot of opportunities in this game, and I would appreciate help with analysis.

I got to move 13, I felt I had to comment on something.

White's 1st 3 moves were curious, weakening the White squres around his (eventual) castled position. And then, on move 12, he voluntarily exchanges off his White square hero, the g2 Bishop.

I am convinced that on move 13 Nf3 or maybe Bh3 is a forced win. You have to take chances like that immediately.

Thanks for commenting. I thought white's moves early were odd as well.

Now that you mention it, I'm looking at the possibility you mentioned on move 13, but I'm just not seeing it. There's a definite possibility, but I haven't found the solution. I've looked at all of the lines I can think of (sacrificial ones, too), but black can counter them with ease, and I can't get around the counters. Care to post the line you were thinking of?

Why did white quit? Unless there is some tactical shot from the final posisiton the game is probably drawn. If anyone has any winning chances its probably white because of his extra attacking unit because he can gang up on a point more times than black can defend it and from a practical point of view black has to be extra careful to avoid forks which will probably be threaten almost all the time.

White is really very limited in the final position. The queen cannot move away from the 1st rank, or mate would follow after Rd1+. Pawn structure on white's kingside is about to be non-existent, and that will suit black's queen and rook exceedingly well.

Black can pin the e5 knight to white's queen as well, or black can just continue kicking pieces around. Black has a lot of options. White... not as many as one would think. Remember, as long as that black queen is on the open diagonal, the white queen can't leave the 1st rank safely.

Black can move into an attacking position very quickly, too.

Do you know a way we can play this position out?  I'd be happy to take the white pieces in a correspondance match with you if you know a way to set it up.... Actually if you want send me a challenge and we can just follow the moves of this game exactly until we get to this position and we can play it out. Would be a good learning experience for both of us. Make it unrated thought.

I tried, but you only accept challenges from people rated 1600+. Sounds like a lot of fun though if you change that setting. We could always just have an engine play it out. You're bound to thoroughly kick my arse if we play a correspondence match, considering I'm really not very good.

Nothing wrong at all with whites first 3 or 4 moves. I play the black variation in every game (1. g6, 2 Bg7), and have played the same moves as white occasionally too (benko opening) when not opening with 1. c4. Its a sound opening imo and allows you to pick apart blacks center.

Luckily in this game, after move 6 white just showed they didn't really know how to play this position, but plenty of other people do.

White fatally weakened his light squares -- Do IM David Pruess's superb chess mentor course on this concept. Rooperi's plan makes use of the light square weakness, there are other ways.  ***edit*** just saw yeres' combination it's stronger than the one I had in mind! Well, anyway, do that chess mentor course it's brilliant.

I had my engine run out the position four times. Twice at a lower depth the game was a draw and twice at a much higher dept white won.
