Low-rated game, looking for general direction to improve in

Hi all! I've only recently decided I want to improve at chess to limber my mind up and because it's a bit more of a relaxing pastime than the sort of thing I'm usually used to. So in other words I'm not great starting out. I just won a game yesterday that went on for quite some time. I know there must be things I could have done better, but I wouldn't know what to look for. Any tips on what my weak points are in general? Any mistakes a beginner might have missed that a better player wouldn't have committed? Thank you in advance!

(note: I played White in this game)

Oh man, you're right. I was so worried at that point about protecting that knight from 23... Nxg6 that I didn't see the choice it forces him to make. Looks like I need to work on seeing the whole board.

Good catch... I would have then also put him in check with 25. Qxd5+, thank you!

In terms of what might be relevant to what you could get again - 4...a6 by him blunders the e-pawn to 5.Bxc6 and 6.Nxe5. That's as far as I looked...

That wouldn't be the case after 4...Bc5 though. I will let you work out why

So if my opponent plays a6 after the Ruy Lopez opening, I should just go ahead and take the knight on C6?

And as far as 4...Bc5, is it because after the exchange, he can capture my f-pawn, then I would need to capture back with my king or move him to f1, cancelling my ability to castle?

1. consider your opening choice- Finding a 1000 playing the ruy lopez with what looks like minimal opening prep doesn't look to good... just stay with the Italian right now, okay? Unless you prefer studying

2. I haven't explored the game in depth yet, but it looks like you lost many a chance to win material- sharpen your tactics!

3. You need to use your king- I hope you calculated your ending In other games you might not be as lucky, and he will use his king and your king... will be getting fat on a diet of chips.

4. whats with the pawn advance? Just leave it there and let the black king do all the dirty work for you! Why waste the time? If you make "the square of the pawn" (count steps to promotion and make a square with the width and length of x, when x=steps needed to promote)
