Mistakes....until they aren't?

In this game I legitimately was making mistakes and thought I would lose. Right around this position on move 18 I begin to see a checkmate possibility that I begin to work towards. I finally succeed and checkmate on move 23. My question is, every single move that I made was to try to balance working towards this mate while not getting destroyed. Was my opponent just that awful or was I just lucky, or both? Because the engine is showing nearly every move I make as a mistake, miss, or blunder....until it isn't. I posted the full game below the checkmate plan.

I would say that the fact you turned a losing position into a won game is a good thing. You were already losing, so you took risks in an attempt to mate your opponent. The moves may not have been the greatest, and they may have missed opportunities to take a greater lead, but you did exactly what you should do in a losing position: counterattack.

You were smart to set up they checkmate attack, and you got lucky that your opponent blundered checkmate

Right. I was very pleased to win this game, but when I analyse it I see that it was honestly....quite bad lol. My current rapid elo is under 600. I feel like it should be 800-900 or possibly over 1k. I think my biggest problem right now is identifying tactics. Not sure how to remedy that besides just spamming puzzles, but that seems boring and not effective.
