I have a very quick question in post #17 here.

See move #18 in post #17

Thanks for any insight.

QUESTION: Why was Kf8 a better move?

First, what gave you the impression that 18...Kf8 was a better move? I hope you're not relying on computer analysis.

The only "theory" of which I'm familiar is experience: if the queens are off the board, especially in an early endgame similar to the text, then it's safe for the king to come out, so ...Kf8 would have been preferable if the queens were off the board since it begins to centralize the king. In this case the queens are still on the board and attacks are raging, so it does make a little more sense to hide the king and to protect the h-pawn besides, but I can't see any immediately compelling reason to favor one move over another.

Yes, Stockfish said Kf8.

Ok, so going to Kh8 wasn't exactly a blunder.

Though with the 2 rooks, it did set up a possible back rank mate.

The way I see it, if computers aren't intelligent enough to gave *reasons* for their conclusions, then they shouldn't be giving conclusions. If there were a tactical reason to favor the move it recommended, then it should have provided that line. How about reposting the game in this thread?

I wouldnt be to concerend about what a chess engine says.  if it cant explain why a move is better then it dioesnt mean much.  Just my opinion but i think you made the correct move.  If the queens were off the board, then i would say 18...Kf8 would be slightly better.

Yes you are close to an endgame, bu it is still to early to be activating your king toward the center.

I agree with the above. In the endgame centralizing your king is almost always a good idea, but you are miles away from an endgame! But it's a good idea to remember that in almost every chess position, "theory"  only comes in to play when there is now concrete tactics on the board. The first thing you need to look at is the exact tactical situation. If there are no tactics in the air, then worry about theory.

BTW: I don't think there is any important difference between the two king moves, and Stockfish 6 confirms that. Remember, if you analyze with an engine, you need to give it a little time, and you can safely ignore any differences of less than at least 0.30

If i remember correctly .33 of a pawn is a tempo?

Who says black is in trouble?   White is only up +1.5 at that check on 18.

Ok, so general rule of thumb is towards the end of game, esp, with bishop or Q not able to attack escape square, moving King to middle is ok, and even good.  I ALWAYS move king to corner, except at VERY obvious end game (only pawns left)

Black's in trouble because he's down a piece.

Oh, I assumed black would just take the rook on the next move anyway, so it seemed pointless to attack the Knight.  I guess black had bigger problems to deal with than taking the Rook.
