My Recent Game Against a 2000 Computer Bot

This is my recent game against a 2000 rated female bot. She was nice to play against. No time control was set, but in certain moves, I played rather quickly as if it was in Blitz 5 min or Rapid 10 min.

It ended up in an endgame. Therefore, my emphasis in this discussion is in the endgame. But I am open to opinions of the opening and midgame as well.

When both rooks of both sides were still in the field, I was not sure whether I could win or not. I think, I did mistakes and even blunders when in the situation.

But when the game turned to King + 2 pawns vs King + rook, I thought I had a chance to win when my pawns were about to promote. During process, I think, I might have missed correct moves to achieve that.

In one situation, she threatened to checkmate my king with her rook, so I was forced to promote one of my pawns to a knight, immediately giving check to her king, so my king could escape without losing.

As you see, the end result was a draw which is actually quite satisfying to me, since she was 2000 rated. But I wanted to beat her this time, because I had got a draw in previous game (and a few losses too 😔).

Now, I wonder if there was really a chance for me to win, esp when I had only 2 pawns versus her king + rook in the endgame.

I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks in advance. 🙏

You played very well in this game, good job. One major opening mistake was 12. cxd5. You probably didn't foresee Qb5+ so it's always good to look for opponent responses such as checks, captures, and threats after you make every move. A better move would have been to recapture with the queen.

Exactly, I realized my mistake after she checked with Qb5+. As I mentioned, at times I played quick eventhough this game had no time restriction.

Capturing with my queen was the 1st option. Bu then I was worried by the d file which could be controlled by her rook. Hence the mistake.

On move 17, Bc5 is a blunder because you left your e pawn en prise (french for 'vulnerable to be captured'). However, your opponent missed Rxe6+ so thats fortunate, but you still lose the pawn after Bxc5 Kxc5 Rxe6. Once again, you should look for checks.

This too. Again, I wanted to immediately develop both my h8 rook and bishop as well as trading the bishop to simplify the game : rooks vs rooks is one of my favorite endgames, beside bishops vs bishops. I dislike being passive. But I should have been more patient, because white didn't have any serious threat in that situation.

I would like to applaud your endgame play. It was very accurate and managed to hold a draw even with 2 pawns vs a rook. However, you threw away a win with Kg2. This natural move blunders a draw because the black king gets too close to your pawn and can threaten checkmate. Instead of 56. Kg2, Kf3 is more accurate as it allows room for your pawn to promote.

Thanks for spotting the chance for me to win in move 56.

I felt during the game, I might have missed correct moves in that situation. That's why I posted this game in case someone, esp the experienced would have found the correct moves.

Thanks again for it. 👍

It is important to calculate multiple variations of your moves. 26. Rd4 is a mistake because you missed b4+. This deflection tactic forces your rook to take the pawn which leaves your d pawn vulnerable to capture and your opponent with a powerful passed pawn on the e file.

I did 26. Rd4, because I didn't find any other moves to defend my d5 pawn.

But then, her b4+ took me by surprise. I thought, fortunately some of her moves were not really strong, that I could get out of trouble.

Here are some of them :

  3. https://www.chess.com/clubs/forum/view/tom-and-jerry-endgame

The 1st is the most serious, while the 2nd and 3rd are more for fun to the audience.
