Need help with endgame

Hello,

I am quite new to chess but I like to play it and I think I am improving quite fast. I like to play against higher rated players beause I learn more then and it's more satisfying if I win. This is my game against a player with 300 rating over me. I think I did good in the beginning of the match but in the later parts of the game it felt like he just played around with me. I would appreciate it very much if I could get some help on what I could have done different, the whole game would be nice but I think I need most help in the end. Feel free to ask any questions if you need to know something.

Thanks in advance!

Thank you very much for your reply Fiveofswords. This helped me alot. As I said I am very new to chess so I have just started to try out some openings and see what fits me, so I guess I will abandon the alapin and try something else next time.

Could I just get a general idea what to do in the endgame (this particular one) should I go for his pawns, his knight, his rook or try to mate him because I couldn't really make up my mind what to do and ended up trying to do everything and accomplished nothing.

I don't really like Five of Sword's line.   I think white gave up the a pawn (and thus all possibility of play on the queenside) far too cheaply.   Here's I kindof rushed the analysis here, so some of this might be a bit off.   But... here's my take on the endgame:
