Need Help With PGN

Speilkalb,

I get a file from chess.com that is in Wordpad format with a txt file extension.   The file is on my desktop.  If I  try to import that to Scid, the desktop appears but not the file.  The result is I can't select a file to import.

The situation appears to be hopeless.  I am not that familiar with neither the terms nor the procedures to perform what's needed.

stephen_33,

I've got to go back to watching football, so I will respond tomorrow to your message.

For now, I agree that the best solution, for the time being, would be to stay with the chess.com analysis feature.  I've use it and find it helpful.

As a matter of interest pizzapier, what kind of PC are you using & which browser/O.S. ?

pizzapier

stephen_33,

I am running Microsoft XP and the browser is Internet Explorer 8.0.

Goodnight, I'll reply to your previous message tomorrow.

Any chance you could give Google Chrome or Firefox a try out?  They're practically the recommended browsers for this site.  I was advised to switch from I.E. to Chrome when I joined chess.com & have never regretted it.
Chrome downloads in a matter of minutes, is very simple to use & is said to be faster than most other browsers (it is quite fast).

This site just doesn't get on with I.E. (Safari isn't far behind).

stephen_33,

Thank you for the fine explanation of chess.com's Game Editor.  It looks similar to the Computer Analysis feature.  I don't know how to use it yet, but at least there are some instructions provided by you and chess.com.  I'll explore Game Editor, once the instructions are clear to me.

For now I will abandon my attempt to use Scid.  I will continue to use Computer Analysis on chess.com.

stephen_33,

I forgot to tell you that I use Google Chrome as my browser for all chess activities.  IE is my browser for everything else.

At least for chess, Chrome works better overall.

Glad to hear you use Chrome - it's a great little browser!

Hope we're not at cross purposes on this because the Game Editor won't actually do any computer analysis for you - it's strictly a virtual chess set.

I analyse all of my current Turn-Based games in it by copying & pasting the FEN strings (a line of text that gives a starting position only, without any moves) from the small window on the game screen into it. You have to switch to Position Setup to paste a FEN into the board & then return to the editor.

You can save any analysis you've done by using the Copy PGN function to copy it all into a text file on your machine & re-load it at a later time but you have to do all the analysis yourself.

Sorry if that wasn't clear.

stephen_33,

You've been helpful and generous with your time.

Uh-oh, FEN strings?...only kidding!  I'll check out the Game Editor.  It might have value to check out some moves, instead of taking out the real chess set.

That makes sense if you're happy with the functions provided by this site. Scid is maybe an overkill to what you want, as stephen_33 pointed out, it's more for the purpose of maintaining your own database of your games on your PC. Maybe you want to take a look at it if you're more comfortable how pgn imports and exports work, you're always welcome to ask more questions about it.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas, Speilkalb.  I agree with your statment.

At my level of chess play, whatever benefits are available through Scid would probably go unnoticed.

So far, I am satisfied with the Computer Analysis available on chess.com.  One thing that is encouraging is when I see my opponent make about the same number of mistakes I do.  It's instructive to take another look at a blunder and attempt to gain some insight  from it.

Glad to do it - there are many people on this site willing to help others - that's what makes it such a good site, although we all moan from time to time.

If you can persevere with Game Editor, I think you'll find it really useful but it takes a little time to find your way around it !  I've practically given up using real sets now because it's so much quicker & more convenient.

Anyway, good luck with that & Merry Christmas.

pizzapier

stephen_33,

Thanks again.

Merry Christmas!

I want to thank all who offered help so I could analyze my games.

Today, I finally got the PGN mailed to me.  I did not analyze the game yet, but for today the major obstacle has been removed.
