I just finished this game, again trying not to play c4 since everyone says that beginners should focus on the main lines. I have yet to annotate the game and again I felt my opponent didnt take me seriously, most importantly where he left his bishop hanging. Not saying I should be taken seriously lol but more that I feel it hurts my learning experience.

I'm confused - when could White have played b4-b5 in this game and not just simply lost a pawn?  Also, if Black had allowed b4-b5 by not playing a7-a6, what would a pawn on b5 accomplish for White?  It's not exactly cramping Black very much and in fact will require at some point a third move (probably a3-a4) for protection.

I don't know WHEN it might be played, but to me b5 would have been fine for Gilded's 19th move, and Raf8 would have been as well.

2. Nc3 is not main line, though? I would think that Nf3 after 1. e4 c5 is the main line, not Nc3.

VirtualMichael

But 2. Nc3 IS interesting, because Kasparov has played that way before.

lol I should be more accurate. I mean playing e4 or d4. I always played c4 because I thought it was so fun.

I wanted to find a move that is harder to figure out my intention for my opponent. I did not know Kasparov played that lol but really I am sure almost all my opening moves have been replicated by some GM

Play whatever you do well with, as long as you don't have too little tactics experience due to disproportionately favoring games with slow-manuevering/attrition-based chess.

Gilded_Candlelight

Actually I am beginning to worry lol I have played several good opponents ranked 100 or more points ahead of me and I have won. I think either I got a lot better in the last few games, I am paying more attention because I am opening with the kings and queens pawn or I have had the bad luck of facing several people who are ranked high but their rank is inflated. I am cautious lol so I will lean towards the latter.

Was your tactic to compliment him with "not to bad at all" and get something, or are you referring to the quality of tactics' being used?

VirtualMichael

Heck, 1. c4 is doable; one of my "best" miniatures was begun with my doing 1. c4.

Gilded_Candlelight

yeah but all I ever played was c4. So I am trying to learn better chess lol
