Here is a live chess (long) game I have recently played.  Please take a took.

Why not 4. e5. The knight doesn't have any fun place to go. White has lots of central space.

7. dxe6 followed by Qxd6 wins a pawn, looks good.

What was your plan if 20. ... Kg7 defending the knight? Seems like you should have taken this knight instead of giving check. Your bishop on e2 is defended.

I hadn't looked at 20. Kg7 in the game, but now that I look at it, Bxd4 seems best.

In that case you're winning a pawn. You could have won a piece by taking directly 20. Rxf6. Always consider your opponent's best moves.

I know, but I didn't want to lose my light bishop.

It's time to correct that thinking then. You turned down winning a piece because you didn't want to make an equal trade of pieces. Your light squared bishop is guarded, so you get a knight for it. You don't lose your bishop, you get a knight for it.
