Checkmate is when a king is under direct attack and has no legal way to escape. A player who is checkmated loses the game. In chess, the king is never actually captured; the game ends the moment a checkmate is delivered.

The three ways to escape a check

To understand checkmate, it helps to know the three ways a king can get out of a regular check:

Capture: The king or another piece can capture the piece that is giving check.

Block: A piece can be moved in between the king and the attacking piece to block the threat. This option is not possible against a knight or pawn attack.

Run: The king can move to an adjacent square that is not under attack.

How checkmate happens

A checkmate occurs when a king is in check and none of the above escapes are possible. The king is essentially cornered and helpless.

Example

Here is a classic "Back Rank" checkmate, where a rook or queen attacks the enemy king from the back row.

The black king is being attacked (checked) by the white rook on the back rank.

The king cannot run because it is blocked by its own pawns.

The king cannot capture the rook because the rook is protected by the white pawn.

The king cannot block the check because there is no space between it and the rook.

The black king is checkmated. The game is over, and White wins.

Checkmate vs. stalemate

The difference between checkmate and stalemate is crucial for a player to understand.

Checkmate: The king is in check and has no legal moves to escape.

Stalemate: The player whose turn it is has no legal moves, but their king is not in check. In this scenario, the game ends in a draw.

This is a very common check mate trap among beginners called the scholar's mate. If You look closely You do in fact not have any legal moves. Remember the Queen moves in all directions and in this case it covers all your Kings possible moves. Your Kings cant capture the Queen because it is being defended by the bishop. There are many ways to deal with this 4 move check mate trap however. Just watch a shorts video about it and you'll easily be able to defend it.

This was my first game back from vacation. I played as black this game. It wasn't played with some crazy high accuracy(I played with 86.0 accuracy) but I ended it with a cool king move checkmate which was a first for me. Hope you enjoy.

Yo, I wouldn't suggest getting your queen out in the early game and if you do make sure to see what it attacks, on turn 7 you could have taken the rook for free

Thank you for the advice! I will try to pay attention to that in the future, but my bishop did the job.
