That's why Be1. Now black has to defend the threat of Qh5. If black renews the back rank threats by Qa1 then the queen is off the defense of the a2-g8 diagonal.

why not Bc1? is it because of some crazy bishop sac on f2?

Bc1 Qa1 Nd3 pins both bishop and knight.

Be1 Qa1 Kf1 prevents the pin.Similarly  g3 is better move.
