The main reason you lost is that you made major blunders. If you don't notice when you can win material or when you are about to lose material then you will lose lots of games. Theory and strategy does not even come into play. 

 

As an example, look at this position.

 
 

To prevent losing material, just before you commit to a move, check to see whether your opponent can check you or capture any pieces. And when it is your move, check whether you have any checks or captures that you could make. Simply doing this would probably enable you to win the game. In the position above you only had two checks to consider, Qxg2+ or Rxg2+. Both were good moves. One of them was mate.
