Rook Sacrfice to break open the kingside

I have seen my opponents sacrificing the rook countless times. Is this a line that I am not aware of or just a bloke? I guess the idea is to break open my kingside but I personally think that one simple sacrifice is not enough to do so. What do you people think?

Whether this sacrifice is sound or not, it does lead to an interesting game full of tactical opportunities.

I agree with the above.  The bishop on b7 is on the wrong diagonal -- its too easy for white to close that diagonal here.  Moreover, with black's pawn structure, its hard for the dark squared bishop to deploy optimally for the attack.  Bd6 with the pawn still on d7 is going to be a problem since white can play e4 e5, and black can't play d5 without closing out the b7 bishop.

Its a very thematic sack that works when the board position is right, but here its bad.
