Rook sacrifice: right or wrong?

Hello,

This is my first post on this forum:) I've been coming in and out of chess for the past few years due to work. Recently, while playing a few games, I was reminded of this position that arose last year in one of my team chess games. I remembered this clearly because:

1. One of my first team chess games which I joined on move 27. Rxh3

2. The position for us (black) was quite passive. Although we were a pawn up, I didn't like this position and was convinced we were going to lose (gut instict, I couldn't read that far ahead! Although we did lose a few moves later as we shall see...)

3. Since my motto in chess is: "when in doubt, complicate matters" I suggested the exchange sacrifice but no one believed me :( Well, I missed out 26. Kg2 so... Anyways I was just wondering if it would have been right or wrong, any thoughts?

It was definitely sound. It looks to me like Black had to lose his queen as a result.

You may have had another good sacrifice even earlier, though I didn't analyze it: 23. Bxg6 fxg5 24. fxg5 with a lot of lines suddenly open around Black's king, say with a follow-up like Bh7, Qg6+, Rf7.

You meant 23. Bxg6 right? haha I only entered at position 27 so I didnt know=/ its a team game. Oh yes, btw I was on the black team! although yeah I agree the black king was not in good shape either way. Thats why I was thinking of the rook sac on 27. ...Rxh3 at least offers some counterplay from black perspective.

I assume you're talking about Rxh3 exchange sac. I think white can hold after Rxh3 Kxh3 Qxf4.

Oops, you're right. I corrected the move number above. With my line Black does have a threat of ...Qg3+ whereas with your line I can't see Black has any saving resource at all. It was just an idea, since as you said, Black is in trouble regardless.

After 30. Kf2 f4 , 31. Rg1 is met with Qh4+, 31. c4 drops the white bishop after Qg3+ 32. Ke2 Re8+, on the other hand, 31. Bg2 Qg3+ 32. Kg1 f3 and the pinned bishop falls. If 31. Be2 Qg3+ 32. Kf1 I don't see a good defence for white after Rh8. If 33. Qe4 then f3 attacks the pinned white bishop and threatens mate on both g2 and h1. Perhaps I missed smth? Either that or perhaps it is better for white to give up his bishop and trade off to end game?

condude2

Doesn't Rg1 win in the final position of your line?

travischia

I think Rg1 can be met with Qh4+ 32. Kg2 Qg3+ 33. Kh1 Rh8+

VibrantMoves

travischia, I'm sorry but I couldn't understand your continuations. How would you play f4? What would be your next move after Kxh3?

ewq85

Dude you had it. Rxh3 Kxh3 Qxf4 Kg2 is forced Qg5 check Kf2 is forced and after f4 white is lost.

VibrantMoves

I think the simple continuation after Qxf4 is Rh1. (which hangs the bishop lol)

Hmm completely no defence for white? I just realised 31.c4 Qg3+ 32. Ke2 Qh2+ 33. Kd3 Nb4+ is also winning for black...

@VibrantMoves

28. Kxh3 Qxh4 29. Kg2 Qg5+ 30. Kf2 f4

Not only that, leads to mate too. 29. Rh1 Qxf3 If 30. Kh4 Qg4# If 30. Kh2 Rh8+ 31. Kg1 Rxh1#

In my line white will lose a piece to stop mate. I guess if you want to call that a defense sure white isn't totally lost on the spot but still lost IMO.

ewq85

Il check stockfish to be sure but I'm pretty sure I'm right.BRB

White has the option to sac queen on g6 after f4. All other moves lead to mate I think. Yeah, an engine analysis would be great.

ewq85

Yep Rxh3 either leads to mate or white has to continue my line after f4, Qxg6 check Qxg6 Rg1 Bb7 and be down a piece after Rxg6. With good play white is busted after Rxh3. Maybe next time your team will trust you lol.

VibrantMoves

Yes, very good suggestion, travischia.

travischia

Haha thanks guys! great discussion:)

Glad to help, I love me a good rook sac😁
