Stockfish says 28...Rxc5 is blunder, I disagree, horizon effect still exists.

So in this game I play the exchange sac 28... Rxc5 to stop white's attack. Stockfish says it's a blunder and shifts the advantage from black to white.

I had stockfish play itself from this position and black won twice and white managed a draw (on highest depth my computer could handle).

My bishops are x-raying white's king, my pawn chain grows in the direction of white's king and white can't stop black from getting a passed pawn (a great long term resource).  It appears White can only draw with best play.

I believe Stockfish is in error.

Also if I don't that that Knight on move 28, white has a very scary attack. Maybe engines can hold it, but I don't think a human can in a rapid time setting.

What attack are you talking about?

Why not just 28...Bg5  After 28...Rc5? 29.Qc5 What are you going to do?

I disagree with Bg5, there's no open files for his rooks, and my bishops are pointing at his King along open diagonals. My bishops are worth more than his rooks.

Play the position after 28...Rxc5 on Stockfish vs Stockfish, The score was 0.5 - 2.5  in a three match series from this position. Black is winning.

You weren't playing stockfish.

You weren't playing a 3800 rated human.

You were playing a 1400 human, and threw away a good position.

Um also your opponent hung a free bishop

On my computer, it is rating it as a mistake, not a blunder. Also, you have to be senile to believe a position like that can be suffering from a horizon evaluation. Practically Rxc5 may be a good move, but on a computer scale, probably not. Having Stockfish play itself 3 times is not a very good experiment. At least try having it play itself from that position with the move it recommends instead of Rxc5 3 times and compare.

If you sac, 29. pxr gives good play, but 29. qxr doesn't leave black with anything.  28. bg5 is just a free exchange and is clearly the better move.

Chess.com's default setting doesn't give stockfish enough time.  Its not a flaw with stockfish, its all on chess.com, but you can adjust the settings and let it run on a key move manually.

1. It is true that 28...Bg5 picks up the exchange for nothing, and was to be preferred.

2. It is also true that after 28...Rxc5? 29.Qxc5 Black has thrown away all of his advantage.

3. It is also true that after 28...Rxc5? 29.dxc5? Rc6 30.Na4? both opponents missed the pretty shot 30...b5! when white cannot take en-passant, and is totally lost.

Aside from Bg5, the straightforward 28. ..Bxd4 wins a pawn, e.g. 29. Qxd4 Rxc5 with pressure on the c-file and a dominant central pawn advantage.

You missed a counter-tactic, 29. nxb7 which comes reasonably close to equalizing for white.
