The danger of trying to bludgeon a lower rated player

Game I played recently in Glasgow League Division one - I play for a club that battles relegation each year and opponent plays for one that vies for championship.  As I am only rated 1705 and he was 1897 he was understandably looking for the win.  Overall we managed an insanely good result, drawing 4-4 with them on the night as most of the team performed miracles.  Here is mine.

 You are absolutely right. You nailed me doing what I ask others not to do...lol.

Scholastic chess is highly organized here and we have major tournaments (Southern Open this April). The interest level for organized league chess is just not there though.

Was your game the biggest upset of the match?

Actually no, a 1640 beat a 1942 who was on a lower board for no apparent reason.

Wow.. you guys did have your backs against the wall. I always enjoy pulling for the underdog... in anything. 

I would love to see that game too. Do you have the notation?

Sadly no...to be honest when we turned up I just wanted to finish quickly so I could watch the IM they had at Board 1 play our club champ.  No such luck.

How in the world did your 1640 get paired up with their 1942?

Legally you can vary board order by about 100 points.  The rule is its supposed to be the strongest player on the higher board, which is not always the highest rated.  Funny old system.

That is weird but maybe it proved itself out.... Mr. 1642 won..lol.

Actually I am a rangers fan - my pal sent me an ironically worded message with the "Soccer appreciation trophy" after my team got beat in the latest bad-tempered soccer match.

Douglas Bryson - he won, I have admired him for years.  He is a correspondence GM too.

 R you the only person oon chess.com with a rating of 2800ish that actually chats in forums. I think the other guys cheat cause of there never active they just play on a playing website what idiots.

It will take me about 50 years plus a cybernetic brain implant to reach 2800.

Just as a follow-up, if anyone is interested, the team we drew with in this match Shettleston have now won Glasgow League Division 1, they won 7 matches, lost one and drew this one.  We will finish 6th (Inverclyde) out of 10.
