so in this position white playes rf8+ which is marked as "brilliant" by the computer

however when white playes the other move re7+ the evaulation of stockfish is -7.15 which means black is totally winning even though re7+ is marked as excellent by stockfish

so can someone pls explain why re7+ is excellent even though the evaluation changes and stockfish totally thinks black is winning after this move? I mean shouldn't re7+ be marked as blunder since black is totally winning after this move? also how in the world does stockfish think that black is winning i mean white will basically give perpatual check and if black ever takes then its stalemate.

excellent because Stockfish thought black was losing and this was just another way to lose. eventually it thought the king would be able to hide in squares protected by the queen. however, after Rf8+ the king can't go anywhere, the rook will still be able to check... all this is just assumptions though...

i think it's because after re7 there's some line where the only check white has can be taken by a queen, making it so it's not a stalemate anymore

got it but if thats the case then why does stockfish mark the move re7+ as excellent, i mean shouldn't the move be marked as a mistake or blunder?

It thought it was losing anyways, didn't consider Rf8

maybe because a brilliant move is hard to find? idk tho, computers are weird

it's a move that wasn't considered beforehand because it was chopped by the tree-line system or whatever it's called that enables computers to choose between a few moves and analyze them deeply...

so thats probably why rf8+ was marked as brilliant since its the only way to keep stalemate and all the other moves are losing i think

but does stockfish have access to the tablebase stuff?

I know in some Leela vs. Stockfish game Stockfish used it, maybe this version didn't have it? 12 or 13 or NNUE should still have it...

Brilliant moves don't always make sense, especially if you could have made a brilliant move or the alternative best move.

I thought the brilliant move was the best move .________.

applauding is a physical outward reaction. Are you saying the quote might have given him a seizure or heart attack?

think of a brilliant move as the only move to keep an advantage or draw or win, since all the other moves will lose

assassin3752

I also like to think a brilliant move is the result of stockfish being drunk
