Several days ago I finished playing in the 3rd Chess.com official tournament 1601-1800. At the start of it I was rated 1642 but had not played a serious game in over a month and my principal goal was to not embarass myself. Finishing third with a score of 4.5/8 and an end rating of 1705 (highest ever!) I'd say my goals were met.

What I would like to do with this topic is make an analysis of all the games I played. I've done so myself, but I found the Chess.com community to be the best analysis tool out there. So here goes...

Kingfisher

First two games I played with an opponent rated 1711, with a lot of expirience. I lost both games, and in both I missed great chances. Kudos to my opponent, who ended up winning the group. My possibly greatest mistake here was playing closed positions, which I don't like and have little expirience with.

I understand your intention of 13.h3 in your first game but to ward off a biship in exchage for your king safety in the long run, I dont think thats a good option.

Weir, I was black in the first game.

Your comment on move 8 in the first game is: "my intent was to play c5 after the bishop retreats, taking control of d5". Is this a typo? Playing c5 would gain control of d4 but would leave a horrible hole on d5. I suspect your 8. ... Na5 was the move where it started to go wrong.

Hello,

In first game, 3...h6 was not really necessary, would of preferred 3...Be7. Instead of 7...Nc6 more thematic of your opening to play 7...Nb-d7 aiming to follow-up with c6 and b5. Don't think your opponents opening play was very threatening though, and 7...Nc6 is ok.  7...Na5 intending c5 was fine. After say 8.Ba2 c5 9. Nd5 NxN 10Bd5 Nc6 black is ok, don't think you can be killed by opponent having one square. 11Nd5 was a blunder giving you a free pawn. Maybe 12 ...Bd7 better aiming to play f5, the bishop is out off play on g6. Not sure what you mean by 20...Bb2, if 21Rb1 Bxa3 22Qb3 your bishop is lost. Finding it hard work to find an improvement for you instead, and after 22...Rfd8, because your Bg6 is not in the game. Maybe a better player will see something.

to be honest, I find the philidor's defense to be extremely harsh in terms of development. can i recommend the sicilian, for example? this way you would not have as much of a trouble for losing time and such.  mostly it seems to be slips, but I praise you provoking of the advancement of king's pawns in the first game. however, I would have preferred 19.. Bh4, as it penetrates the king's base.  but aside from that, you seem to have your opening theory on track- making space is good, but avoid too many pawn moves in place of piece development.

This leads me to my final propaganda: explore the reti Laughing

I wasn't sure about adding my wins here, especially the easy ones. But since I would like to hear your opinion on my overall performance as well, I will include them. My second opponent rated 1674 practically defeated himself; I know I should be respectful and all, but you can't help a chuckle after seeing how he closed both games.

In QGA game, 12h3 is blunder because of 12...b5 isn't? Looks like you should of played 12NxB. Didn't really understand your comment to move 11, when talk about bishop on a8-h1 diagonal, the bishop never was there, but nevermind...

Also with 3.Nc3 you may one day meet an opponent, who creats sharper counter-play than in this game. Instead of 5...b6 black should play 5...c5 6Bxp a6 when because white has played Nc3 early, he should now play 6.a4.  If play 6.0.0 say, then black is very active after 6...b5.

Kingfisher

OK, moving on... games with the third opponent (1603) cost me the total win. In the game where I had black I refuted his unsound early sacrifice and got a quick win. In the other game, I totally blew it and embarassed myself.

Kingfisher

Finally, my last opponent. I didn't expect much from these games, but got quite a lot. His start rating was 1756 and I was sure he would win the group. To better understand the situation, we were still playing our games when the rest of the group was already finished, and he was still competing for first place.

10...f5 is not a mistake. it's a very natural move if you play the KID. His mistakes are 13...Nd7 and 14...Nc5.
