tried the halloween gambit.

when I joined this website a couple weeks or so ago it was along with another new member who had decided to play me chess. we know each other from another website.

anyway I am just a casual player, the kind of person that plays for fun, perhaps at a park or a party or some such.

never been to a chess club or tournment before and before starting I didn't know openings had names. I just played off the seat of my pants. I learned the game off the back of a set I got at walmart for a couple bucks and from playing lots of games.

anyway now that I am learning about the ruy lopez and the queens gambit and what not, I thought I'd try a a neat one called the halloween gambit.

During the game he did a move that wasn't part of the plan and when seeking help from folks who knew the opening better than I, I was informed that you can't ask during a game, so I deleted the post and told them I'd post after the game to get feedback.

so here it is. encouragement and criticism welcome.

he shouldn't have taken the draw....I think the endgame is playable for black.

The Hollaween Gambit was "invented" by a drunk irishman as legend puts it... the best games where this gambit is played is by Grigor Minchev at the chessgames.com database and a killler game is played out b/w me and another 1530 rated player (my profile) where he lost badly... good luck.

This is a very strange game.

You start off playing a very strong game, somewhat aided by the .pdf you were consulting, which is fine as it is within the rules on this site. It is normal for players to start off stronger than their rating would suggest, because of the resources they may use.

Your opponent starts off playing a game that I believe reasonably reflects his rating. He loses ground in an unfamiliar opening. He makes several mistakes.

Suddenly he starts playing like another player, finding the best moves in line with an engine, easily wiping out your lead.

Very strange play from Kmisho.

I am not playing with a computer. I can be quite good, especially if pushed. I felt the move that tipped the balance was bishop f5 to which he responded g4. I was in trouble there. Then I started looking for ways to attack loose pawns. I think he still should could have won but was a little afraid. I took the draw because I thought I was still losing.

when your rooks were playing peekaboo with the white king there at the end, that was intense.   If I found this game frightening, it must be because it was the Halloween opening!   Soon, 85% of games on chess.com will feature the Halloween--just a prediction.   It just looks so cool.   (Sorry, I'm absolutely refusing to analize anything today.)

Well i'd say white had the game when he was up a minor,

your position was way better, but you had some bad luck, and shouldnt have undoubled his pawns.
