I guess he thought Bxe4 was drawish and wanted to try for more. Maybe a draw wasn't good enough here and both players needed a win?
Qxb6 allows Rf8 like you said, and black will at least get the piece back.

Its only Round 1 though so a win isn't all that necessary...

But, I guess Gashimov trusted in his intuition and/or wanted to be adventurous to make the moves he made up there although they weren't best. Later on in the game, Short did pick up that free knight like a move later and Gashimov ultiamtely got compensation, but it wasn't enough.
This simply adds to my fear of making speculative piece sacrifices lol...Its hard enough for me to make speculative pawn sacrifices\
Btw, just realized that the whole game was posted yesterday in the tournament article and Gashimov seems to have won the 53rd MAsters Tourney.
