can someone please tell me how in the hell this was stalemate? One move away from checkmate and this keeps happening. It's driving me crazy.

32.Rb1+ 33.Kh2 Qh1# You should give checkmate in the quickest way possible instead of dicking around pointlessly capturing all the opponents pieces.

If it's happening often enough where it's driving you crazy take a few minutes to review all the games and positions where they end up in stalemate. It seems like you are suggesting there is a pattern with your endgames. Strangemover had some good advice. Once you've identified the problem (stalemate) dont do that anymore. Checkmate instead. For example, on move 25 your rook to d3, move 26 your queen to f3 with checkmate by move 28 or 29. Dont worry about your opponents pieces if they aren't attacking you or defending his king. Just find the quickest checkmate.

Thanks, that makes sense actually. I'm not missing fast checkmates on purpose though, I'm not the most advanced player as you can probably see from my rating.

33 ... Rb2

is an obvious blunder, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

If instead, black plays

33 ... Qh2 then

34. Ke1  Rb1#

By the way, I have written and publish a science fiction book with an exciting story that involves chess.

Usually you may wish to give the opponent's king some room to run about while you are landing the checkmate. Or, leave the opponent with a pawn or two which can still move but not pose any promotion danger. In other words, 29...Rd4 followed by 30...Rd2 is much safer. Let that White pawn run, it won't run for long (just do not let the White pawn capture the a7 White pawn AND promote on a8).

I understand that you are attempting to cut off the White king's access to the second rank, but in doing so, the White king has been denied access to the only escape square remaining (the Black queen has cordoned off four of the five escape squares). The White king is not in check, and therefore, the game ends in a stalemate. It's a pity but this is declared a draw.

The stalemate rule is kind of weird tbh.

If the opponent cannot make a move and is not in check.
Its a draw by stalemate.
