Where did I go wrong?

I just played an excellent game with user L-W-H. Very nice player unlike some of the people I've had to deal with. The game was very challenging for me and I had a lot of fun, but I lost. I kind of gave up at the end because my brain just shut down but would anyone be kind enough to tell me where I went wrong before that?

You had by far the better of the opening.

Until your 18th move I thought you had a vice-like hold on the game. However, 18. ... dxc4 lost your advantage. After that it was quite even. I think 26. ... Rf4 was a mistake - though a really creative move - but white was too worried to capture the rook so you got away with it.

27. ... was not great. It left you down in material and I am not sure your advanced pawn at the end would give you any compensation. But you were still very much in the game until 30. ... Rc7 which was just a blunder.

30. Rc7 was a blunder. I had just given up at that point because I didn't know what to do next. At move 18, I was looking to attack the pawn in the center with the queen but I don't think I noticed I could move the queen to b6. I was much more focused on doubling up for the back row mate. 26 Rf4 didn't quite play out as I was hoping for. I was hoping the rook gets captured and then I chase the king around. I analyzed the line but I was only able to get up to Qxf2+ in my head. I kept forgetting the board after that so I kind of winged it hoping that a new line would open later on.  I am wondering, you suggested moving the rook back to f8. What is stopping the queen from coming back to her previous position? Also in the line you gave 28.dxe5, why would white sacrifice a rook for a pawn?

Reply to Jibril:

I didn't realize trading queens at move 20 was possible. I would have simplified the position. I opened the a file specifically for doubling up the rooks for a back rank mate threat but I for some reason decided the center needed to be better protected since my pieces weren't enough for a back rank checkmate

On a side note, love you user name, avatar, and the background image Jibril on your profile page Laughing

Um corum....In your analysis of gxf4, Qg5+ is impossible due to Qxg5.

The analysis corum gave is the exact same line I was thinking of. I didn't even notice that the pawn could take the queen. Wow, I am really bad at analyzing things in my head.

Doh!!!! Yes, regarding gxf4, Qg5+ is impossible. But that just shows that gxf4 was the right move for white and that 26. ... Rf4 was a mistake.

Regarding the line 27. ... Rf8 28. dxe5 Rxd1+ I was not suggesting that 28. dxe5 was a good move but rather that it was a very bad move. So after 27. ... Rf8 I don't think white had a good move.

After 27. ... Rf8 the queen can go back to her previous position. Nevertheless, I think that is better than giving up the exchange on d4.
