Black's threat is Qxg2. Moving White's pawn to d4 allows Black to play that move. White should have castled instead, protecting the g2 pawn and improving development, with moves like Re1 and d4 (developing with tempo) to follow.
If you were worried about losing the unprotected Knight on e5, Black cannot really capture it after White castles (instead of playing d4), since Black's position would be completely hopeless after White replies with Re1, which is a tough absolute pin to deal with.
