I think he avoided taking the pawn because he didn't want to have to deal with the resulting pin, although it would been better than what actually played out.

I still think tonydal has a point. After 1. ... h4 2. Bxh4 which can respond to almost anything with 2. Bg3 where the bishop pn g3 supported by the pawn on h2 will be hard to break down. I don't think there is a forced mate.
Here is a game where I was comfortable going into a longer endgame, but I found a mating sequence that brought the game to an end very quickly. It all starts out with finding the first more to set off the demise... I'm sure it will not be to hard for you to do it yourself.
