He was too greedy to grab some material and he neglected his own weaknesses.

there is a way out for white ==>  16.  Qg4 !  -  QxQ looks forced then fork with knight at h6, getting the queen back

for this reason 15. ... - Nxf2 ( preventing the Qg4 move ) looks stronger than 15.Nc3 ! example

16 Kxf2 - c4+

17 Ke2 - Re8 +

18 Kf1 - Qg2 mate

5. Nc3/6. Re1 was lame and very non-Lopez. Had he played c3 and kept the tension in the center instead of trading off and trying to assault your Q-side, he could have avoided the disaster he ended up in.

White needs great patience in the Lopez and quick resolutions usually never lead to a good outcome for him.
