Leonid Kubbel was a composer of problems and endgame studies. The reference "Kubbel, 1916" probably refers to one of those.

Kubbel had two brothers, Arvid and Evgeny, both of whom were chess players. Evgeny also composed endgame studies. According to Wikipedia, all three met sad ends: Arvid was executed by the NKVD in 1938, while Leonid and Evgeny died of starvation during the siege of Leningrad in 1942.
