Vasmarok's point holds, Legal's mate only works if neither black knight is developed.  Presuming errors is naive.

I set one up on one of my matches but my opponent did not bite. At least I came out a pawn up on the exchange.

Instead of 5.Nxe5? white sould have played 5.h3, putting the question to the bishop. The point of that move is, that a natural retreat (5...Bh5?) leads to legal's mate, as we know, and the other alternative 5...Bxf3 loses the bishop pair, but is still the preferred option.

I realize it is a bit silly after the original post is deleted, but

6Nxe5 Nxe5

7Qxh5 Nxc4 and white is a knight down with no attack left.
