12th in State!

Hey guys! I just got back from the state chess tournament, and placed 12th for 1st board. There were over 1200 people competing, making it the largest high school chess tournament in the nation. I am very excited that i placed as high as i did. I will be posting some of my games so i can hopefully find some improvements in my play. I went 5-1-1. The 1 draw and 1 loss came from the first game of each day, i can never seem to do well my first game of the day. In addition to some analysis of my matches, i would also appreciate any tips to doing well in matches in the early morning. Once i get past the first match, my tactical mind seems to start working properly, but im hoping I can be playing equally as well regardless of how early it is. Thanks!

Well done!!, I am the opposite, I play badly in the second game of the day. In the morning before your game,  would suggest fresh air, deep breaths, when you get to the board - focus and forget everything else ( not always easy), most of all, enjoy the moment!.

Good luck in your chessCool

That's really great!

Have you considered playing a game against a friend before the real first game of the day begins? Maybe you could get your mind rolling on a game that doesn't matter before you start the real deal.

That would be a great idea, the only problem is that there hadnt been much time to play a legit game (poor time management on our part). I'm not sure if this matters, but theres only like one other person on my team thats is really worth playing, the rest are not very good.

Thanks for all the positive comments! I'm working on getting the games up at the moment

great job! 5-1-1 and only 12th place? that seems really unrealistic. 5.5/7 ties fo 3rd place, unless you got passed over with the tiebreakers.

Well in this case, 5.5 ties for 6th. And unfortunately my school didnt do as well as the other people tied with me

There were also 128 schools there meaning 128 Board 1s so that kind of throws off the usual tournament placements.

The K-12 Florida State Championships wasn't that big, but I placed 3rd in it, so give me some credit, lol. Aside from that, Kudos, very well done Cool
