Hello educated people of the forums i recently haven't been playing chess too much i've really only been playing puzzles and probably 1 or 2 rapid games a day because i've been very busy with school works and a special program in our school regarding an upcoming international examination, but now since my schedule's become lighter again i can devote a few hours to chess everyday, im currently 1400 and i have until June to reach 1600 rapid, is it possible? and what areas should i focus on studying at this level and what would be a good quality amount of time to study per day? many thanks to those who reply.

Hey @DukeRainy! 👋

First off, major respect for balancing school, international exam prep, and still managing to squeeze in some chess—sounds like you’ve been juggling a lot, and now that you’ve got more time, it’s awesome that you’re setting a clear goal like 1600 rapid by June 💪

The jump from 1400 to 1600 in a couple of months is possible, especially if you’re putting in consistent effort. Here are a few focused areas that could help:

🔹 Game Review (Super Important!)Play a rapid game, then analyze it—not just with the engine, but ask yourself: "Where did I lose control?" or "Was my plan clear in the middlegame?" That kind of reflection helps fast.

🔹 Tactics, but With PurposeYou’re already doing puzzles—awesome! Just make sure you’re not blitzing them out. Spend time on each one and really understand the theme (pin, fork, clearance, deflection, etc.).

🔹 Opening ClarityYou don’t need 20 lines deep—just know your first 6–8 moves and typical plans. Try sticking to the same openings during this climb to build pattern recognition.

🔹 Endgames Win GamesEven knowing basics like opposition, Lucena/Philidor (rook endings), and king + pawn technique can give you an edge most people at 1400 overlook.

As for time per day:
1.5–2 hours a day of focused study + games is plenty if you're consistent. Maybe 1 rapid game + review, 30-minute puzzles, and a bit of opening or endgame work.

You got this! 1600 isn’t far—just keep a routine, avoid tilt, and play with purpose. Rooting for you! 🙌
