I teach/ coach chess to middle school students most of whom have none of the advantages of life that our academy school attending opponents enjoy.
For my students, beating the "rich kids" teaches them valuable lessons... that in a game in which you have to "use your brain"... given a chance and some hard work...
they can compete against anybody,
they are just as good as them
and the confidence this gives them is life changing (for many, its the first time they have ever won anything)
There is nothing like raising a chess trophy up to the sky for these students and knowing they are going to take it home to show "mom".
That's why chess is cool.
Chess is cool because it has survived so many years No other game has survived this long.
