2025 Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Weissenhaus: Official Discussion Thread

I wonder if any of the variant starting positions would shift the balance for white or black significantly over traditional chess- more than the advantage for the first move. I am also curious if certain starting positions force a player abandon certain opening principles until the board clears about a bit.
I'm sure some of the starting positions are way too favorable. This was discussed a few years ago and I'm not sure a good resolution was found other than the suggestion that some positions not be used. The fact that they're switching to a new position each game could be a problem of fairness if they only play 2 classical games. I think they should use only positions that are under .5 starting out using the top engines in the world to calculate them.

How and when do they determine the starting setup? And is the normal variant also possible or is it really chess959?
It's random. Normal variant isn't possible.

车经过的格子是否受到攻击并不重要,只有王经过的格子受到攻击才重要。在这种情况下,王车易位就不可能了。但由于王没有经过任何受到攻击的格子,所以王车易位是合法的。

The final 4 are Carlsen, Keymer, Caruana, Sindarov.
The losers going to the Cellar Dwellers Bracket are Nakamura, Gukesh, Farouzja, Abdusattorov.
I think there's a losers bracket, right?

It is single elimination bracket, so no losers bracket.

I keep wondering how much cheating is going on at the top level of chess, especially when players have the tools to do it. This is particularly the case when making the best moves in critical situations and choosing the best opening lines in a complex Chess960 game. When the stakes are high, with a large prize fund and players' pride on the line, and there are opportunities to cheat, it’s understandable to question the integrity of the game. Maybe it's just my natural skepticism!
