I'm glad he won. I'm looking forward to the other 4 events. I hope Vinny gets confidence from this freestyle event & it will carry over to regular chess events. Good payday too for 8 days of play.

I think a series of events like this throughout the year is the best way to pick a candidate for the world championship match instead of the one single candidates tournament. Players might not be at the top of their game for that event but might be the better player overall as a bunch of tournament results would show. Maybe take the average finish over 5 events & let that be the qualification criteria.
