A confusing comment made at the Canidates tournament.

It was the final round with Carlsen and Kramnik having equal points. Kramnik was in a msut win situasion against Ivanchuk as black because he didnt own the tie break. I watched some commentary and everyone was curioius about what opening kramnik would choose to absolutely fight as black for a win. He picked 

Which everyone applauded saying yes taht is the correct decision. What is d6 leading to usually besides the pirc?

going into a pirc which everyone knows is a bit worse for black. Why didnt kramnik pick an  opening that was also fighting but a lot more classicaly better. I mean i understand not to pick queens gambit declined, Kid,

because they have fast drawing lines but stuff like the nimzo or slav or grunfeld! that doesnt draw that easy. why g6? isnt it simply considered 2nd rate? and this is a line where white can press and press but will never lose.
