Assuming you have to try and win the game, I would take a rook as my piece to live or die with. They are protected to start (unlike pawns), and they are not developed until later than most other pieces. So there is a decent chance that I or my opponent get mated prior to the Rook being in danger as compared to any other piece. There is also generally a lot more space on the board at the time the rook is active on there so maybe he can run around as needed while I am being mated .. assume I am allowed to try and live more than try and win the game.
