Ok, in the light of everything we've heard and discovered to date, we have decided to go back to the original plan and introduce a new echess setting:

Your options on a new "Default Info Tab" setting will be...

MOVES (unless new chat)

CHAT

DETAILS (unless new chat)

NOTES (unless new chat)

Coming very soon...  People who want things to be as they were before will have to change their setting to "Chat," as the default will be "Moves" (so as to not change default behavior yet again).

Cheers, and thanks again for all the input!

This is why Chess.com is so much better than the opposition. They listen then they act.

Well, to be fair, in this case they acted, then they listed, then they reacted.

They made a similar change with the autotracking topics feature and also ended up subsequently adding a configurable default to it as well.  It would be good if, in the future, giving users control over new features right out of the gate (especially when they are changes to existing features) was the norm.

Hey, let's just be happy that they act/react at all, most sites that I frequent won't even listen.

Fair enough.  Credit where credit's due, this is a very accommodating and responsive site that is sensitive to user sensitivities.

As a wise man once said, "A user setting if necessary, but not necessarily a user setting." :)

Each new one adds.. just.. a.. little.... more....... drag..

The extent to which they increase the effort required to code and test new features can be quite impressive.

Not to mention usability.  When it comes to new features, say like the messages at the bottom of people's games I agree that there's no need.  I'm certainly not saying that everything be configurable.

Both of these changes, however, were alterations to the behaviour of existing functionality people were intimately familiar with -- in fact, I'd venture a guess that the areas impacted are two most used features of the site (forums and eChess), the impact of which could have, and arguable should have, been anticipated.  We ended up with user settings on them anyway, something which likely would have been easier done if included in the original design.

Don't get me wrong -- I appreciative of the continuous improvement and the responsiveness to users, I'm simply suggesting that with a little foresight chess.com could have saved itself some headaches.
