"safe mode"
This is my appeal to the lords of Kobol and the lords of chess.com: please implement a "safe mode" like you can with Halo/XBox live and other online gaming communities that can be turned off to allow swearing.
Here's my reasoning:
As a business, your goal is to make money. To acquire and retain paying customers, they need to have a good user experience. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that your goal as a business is to create the best possible user experience for as many people as possible in order to make them happy and thus make the most money.
Chess.com caters to literally an entire planet of people with many diverse preferences. For some, a good user experience is a safe environment with no swearing. They should be accomodated! For others, a good user experience is being able to express oneself using the full breadth of one's vocabulary thereby revealing their passionate, gritty humanity. They should be accomodated too.
It wouldn't be that complex to have a developer add a "safe mode" variable that is activated by default. The more colorful personalities could disable the safe mode and play with other zesty personalities, thereby having a better user experience. This precludes them having the unsavory experience of a kick or ban. Who wants to give money to a company that kicks and bans you?
So for the sake of our global, pluralistic community, for the sake of chess.com and even for f_*^s sake (see what I did there?), please add this functionality and accomodate everyone's preferences. The cost of the developer's time will be less than the cost of future lost customers due to pissing them off. You add one variable to user profiles and one IF statement to the match-making algorithm. Boom. Done. Easy.
My favorite thing about money is that you can spend it. What would you spend your extra money on?
I like the current solution. People can still use chat to convey the emotion they want to convey if they were allowed to swear but because of the filters they have to be creative to do it.
I'm pretty sure conservatives swear... I'm remember something about Dick Cheney saying "go ____ yourself". If anything the ability to convey strong emotions without using the 7 words (or whatever the filters are set to) is a sign of creativity, which if we are relying on stereotypes is not a strong suit of conservatives (the root word is conserve not create).
I recommend taking it as a challenge. For instance when I blunder and want to take out my anger on my opponent I like to tell them to "Die Of Hate." I just abbreviate it to DOH and I've never had trouble with the filters or even any complaints.
When I play chess I get a feel for the individuals determination, ego and will to win. If everything goes the way I want, then I get to crush those for sport, quite appealing really. I really don't need a "potty mouth button" to add to the moment.
Can I assume then that you can't have a good user experience unless your swearing?? Your assumtions are incorrect. What if the're not in it for the money?? Where do you draw the line. Do we need a default safe mode for smokers? Drug addicts? I shouldn't have to log out just to shot up some heroin. I might look at this suggestion differently if it came from a paying member, but the're not making a lot of money off of you Johnny. X box is a completely different platform than chess. Why would it be "safe" to swear up a storm in default mode?? Wouldn't the children still be there??
What about just do it like ninjakiwi? the f word(even if coded) shows up as ****. crap shows up as ****. the even C-R-A-P shows up at ****. so you have to do this if you wanna swear : C

They could use the Hearthstone medium of communication, that is, buttons for these emotes:
greetings
well played
threaten
sorry
oops
thanks
Ok, that's a good explanation. You got me. I know nothing about computer design, and maybe your right. Sorry.
I demand a toilet here on chess.com because I want to pee on this site while playing my games, increasing my UX.
Please developpers, add a pee mode...
Some things are better not added.
Admittedly, I exaggerate.
Yet, I like it that chess.com does not cater for flamers.
But please don't restrict communication with limited emotes, sometimes I want to analyse a game with my opponent.
As a business, your goal is to make money and not spend too much. (...)
FTFY.
Programming an "unsafe" mode with separate forums, game chat rules, etc. would cost some programming, plus complaint costs.

Altering the spelling to get the point across works too, unless they've changed that, like "fuk".

There are words in Dutch, which are very normal day words, like the translation of 'you can'. It is a swear in English. There are Dutch players who were talking politely, yet were accused of using a swearing word in English. To have a good dictionairy of swearing, you should be able to find out which language is used. That can be quite tricky.
Please explain to me, how could you make a difference between the proper use of the first name of mr. Cheney and an insult to that same person?
