Abandon in blitz.

What do you people think about blitz games, in case you are in a lost position? Keep playing and try to win by time? Or abandon? I just want to check what is more fair with ethics.

Most players resign when they know the position is lost. Sometimes they are wrong. That is, in a game I played yesterday, my opponent resigned after my blunder made the position even. He may have thought that I was winning material due to a back rank checkmate threat. If so, he overlooked that the checkmate threat only wins back the sacrific d material.

I will play out a lost position if there is any reason to believe that my opponent cannot complete the task in the time remaining. I will underpromote pawns if my opponent does not resign.

Abandonment is poor manners akin to starting threads about rematches. Maybe worse.

Sorry for my poor english, I think I did not understand what you mean in your last words in your reply.  Maybe I started the thread with the wrong words, is that the meaning?  If it is so, I apologize for that.

My last comment is not directed at you.

Abandonment is against the rules of fair play. This site takes measures against those who abandon games.

Rematches are a separate matter that tend to come up in these discussions.

Ok, I understood now.  When I wrote Abandon, I meant resign.  Thanks for your reply.  :-)

Wow. Those words are similar in several languages, but in English with reference to online chess, abandon and resign are very different.

Now that I understand your original question:

There is no ethical problem with playing on in a lost position, nor is it unfair to an opponent to expect him or her to checkmate you in the allotted time. The clock is an element of the game. In blitz, it is often the critical element.

Ok, Zyrab, thanks for your replies.  As a matter of fact, here in Brazil, in our language, we say Abandono, meaning resign, lol.  Ok, Thanks for all.

I think that's the word in Spanish, too, and maybe Italian. I recall seeing it in game scores. Spelling varies of course.

For anyone playing games made up with low rated opponents like yours truly, it's a mistake to resign too quickly because many games are lost on time because of the failure to find the moves for checkmating opponent.
