Which part is common? Why is exiting a browser treated differently than disconnecting?

Is this new? I accidentally closed my browser, quickly got back within a few seconds, but when I came back to live chess I lost the game because I "abandoned." Does this mean that all of those people who have been "disconnecting" for so many years will now register a loss when they disconnect?
