Advantage of having pieces in the center

What is the advantage of trying to capture the center of the chess board.. People say that when a piece is in the center it can attack a large no of squares... But if the piece is attacking a large no of squares isn't it attacked also by pieces from a large no of squares.. and it is easily captured what could be the real advantage of capturing the center then??

Good question; control (you cannot capture the centre) of the centre is sound basic advice or rule following early development of pieces, however each game certainly from middle game onwards is different. If somebody controls the centre one natural course is to look for weaknesses on the flanks and any subsequent attack which could undermine the centre control. If for example you have N in a good outpost in the centre and protected by a P or P's then generally you only control it if, following exchanges you gain material advantage or good compensation in space, position etc. The main advantage but not the only one is that control of the centre gives you more control of the board and therefore control of the game normally (flank weaknesses etc may undermine this though).

Reasoning here is endless (weakened squares, unprotected pieces etc) and others will no doubt have the views so enough from me, however just remember as with life in chess 'RULES ARE FOR THE GUIDANCE OF WISEMEN AND THE OBEDIENCE OF FOOLS'. Best of Luck
