as opposed to OTB?
advantages of playing chess through internet online or live
It is free, you do not need to go anywhere. That's it I think. Real life games, tournamenst are much better.

yes , tournamenst & trophies

OTB stands for "over the board" meaning face to face, in real life.
I guess he was wondering if you were asking about the advantages of playing online compared to live on this site. Or were you asking about advantages of these types of chess on this site compared to when players play offline over a real board.

Internet (if you are meaning Correspondance or Onlne) Chess allows you to play games at a slower pace, develop best replies for openings and strategy and produces some very beautiful and interesting games ranging from clear and fast wins to some that last for months without any clear progress at times.
Live chess is more closer to over the board or coffeehouse/club chess with the added factor of having timers set (or not) and allow you to either play a longer game (10 minutes plus 15 seconds added at the end of a move or longer) and also Blitz and bullet games (anywhere from 1 min to even 10 minute games).
Both have the possibility of peple using engines to generate moves but even still, live Blitz allows you to practice favorite openings in a faster time control than if you played a friend in front of a board or over the course of many weeks or months. The level of errors is a bit higher in Blitz but there are also alot of opportunities to sharpen up on tactics and endgame play if you are pretty decent with the shorter time controls.

The main advantage for me is that playing online I get to play virtually whenever I want, drag out games for weeks making moves every few days when I get a chance, and I get to play a wide variety of different players from around the world. Unlike OTB which only occurs when someone I happen to know who plays chess has about an hour or so free and can come over. In the small town I live in, you can probably count the number of chess players on one hand. And you can count the number of people who don't play but know how the pieces move on the other hand and have several fingers left over.

You gotta come up to Portland, OR, N2. We have blitz games right in a park downtown, chess clubs and great coffee shops to play chess at. Where I am in Medford, OR, I feel as though I am the only person that plays chess here that does not call the Knights "Horsies"

Actually , I started discussion about online chess & live chess which means Blitz and bullet games not rea board chess

Oh ok.
In online chess you have many days to think about your move and you can even use books and databases of games to research the opening moves you play. In these games you can try ideas and have lots of time to make sure they're ok tactically by moving the pieces on an analysis board to be sure. The benefit is you have lots of time to find a move you like.
Live games are good practice for the kinds of games you will play at a club or tournament. They are timed and you can't use any help from databases or books. In these games you have to be able to spot tactical errors on your own and not take too much time because of the clock. The benefit is these games is they're more like the games you find at clubs and tournaments and you practice fundamental skills like visualization, tactics, and practical decision or intuition skills like the best way to defend or attack when you don't have much time to think.

hahahaha , same like my area , so you are plying online , what other things you do to over come that thing.

Same thing, at our club only arbiters who know the real names of pieces

I can play Chess, listen to music, sit in my underwear on my bed, have a blanket wrapped around me, all at the same time. No such thing possible in OTB.

There is a local chess club here in another town that met at the library every Saturday, but last time I went there were only a couple other players there, so I'm not sure if they still meet or not. I wish I had more time to go but sometimes my Saturdays are busy.

Advantage of chess on the Internet is purely convience if you have a family kids and not much time to get out and play or there's no chess club around chess online is always there.
Disadvantage: your at the mercy of people who relentlesly cheat with sophisticated engines and bots all day long chess online is just a pushing and shoving match with an anonymous bully who likes kicking sand in people's faces and trash talking in the chat box.
I'd rather play face to face chess with friends it's more fun and enjoyable.

Same thing here but only once a month for us. i showed up and they were playing Parcheesi.

You need to play in Portland sometime. anyone who is on this site that has played at Pioneer courthouse Square knows we migt actually get that type of behavior in the park all the time (though I must admit I thought the same thing when they had a naked bike ride in Portland as well: the people participating were also the ones you wanted to keep thir clothes on).
Seriously though, i miss OTB games as well but I am learning alot about openings and tactics in my Onine chess games as well.

The commute is much better from my bedroom to my computer in the living room or office. It beats driving halfway across San Francisco through traffic and then probably struggling to find parking. I'd really like to play at the closest club to me, The Mechanics' Institute, which has many strong players and a great history, but it's really inconvenient for me to get down there.
Advantages of playing live would be more serious players, better discussion of the game afterwards, playing with a real board and pieces rather than a 2D representation, the added pleasure of watching other games in person (much more enjoyable than watching games online), maybe opportunities to find study and training partners.
