The only reason Alireza qualified to Candidates 2024 is because he played in a Swiss tournament rather than World Blitz or Rapid tournaments.

Because of this behavior, shouldn't Alireza be demoted to IM or have some sort of punishment atleast?

I mean, it wasn't cheating but it was certainly a lack of sportsmanship. Something has to happen, right?

Nope. Nothing needs to happen to him. Perhaps FIDE could adjust the qualification rules.

Okay, I assumed I'd get an answer like that considering he didn't get disqualified. Thanks!

If anything needs to change, it’s the rules for qualifying for the Candidates. Firouja’s actions were within the rules as they stand now.

Alireza really didn't do anything wrong. he literally played by the FIDE rules for qualification.

you sure there are no other reasons?

also I don't think that's worth demoting to IM

Swiss Opens can be dangerous territory, and no guarantee. Your opponents could be underrated and a single draw could send your elo into a freefall.

Dominguez also tried to qualify for the Candidates via a Swiss Open - but he ended up withdrawing from the tournament after he lost rating points, instead of gaining them ...

Alireza is a top 10 player in the world. It might seem like a jerk move to you, but it’s a legal and a smart one. He doesn’t have to give more effort. In no way should he be demoted

Alireza played within the rules of the tournament and achieved success through his performance.
