Anand vs Topalov: Anand threw away the game

LOL @ people calling the Gruenfeld unsound. Soon we'll find out that the Najdorf or the KID are completely unsound as well, it seems. This is just wrong.

Look...I am a supporter of Anand. The Grundfeld is perfectly sound...he came out of the opening with equality(which is what black hopes for, in most openings)...so don't blame his lost on opening choice. Clear as daylight...he was outplayed after the opening...he chose the wrong line...and clearly Topalov was more prepared. Good Game.

That Anand is really an idiot. I don't understand why he didn't use his Rook to knock off the Rock of Topolov. By doing so he might have save the game. Try that situation yourself you would know what I'm talking about. Here is an e.g. of what I'm taking about.

black could have still played.

Exactly. That is what I've also just said.

What would the continuation have been - I am not good enough to see how this match was won

Rd7+ Ke8 Rxd4+ wins the queen for the bishop.  I'm an idiot and I can see that.

Curious to know if there's a mate in the pipeline, though...

It's so obvious now I think I've had one too many glasses of wine

The link above at previous post looks at post-moves.

i spent hundreds and hundreds of hours studying and learning the grunfeld. actually probably a couple thousand....and eventually i just trashed the whole opening for myself because white ALWAYS seemed able to just start invading black like this. I suffered the black side of games like this so many times in the grunfeld and this just reinforced my confidence that giving the grunfeld up was a wise idea.

OMG, "hundreds" of hours "actually...a couple of thousand".  Are you serious?  Are you out of your mind?  You've spent time than most
GMs spend preparing for a championship match on just the Grunfeld?  Why?  Do you have some sort of fetish?

I think you need, either, a reality check or a different hobby.   I'm thinking if a GMs prep time is say, 10 hours a day for 3 months that's about 900 hours.  And you're claiming more than that..much more than that: "Thousands".  Hmmm.  Sounds suspiciously like hyperbole. Care to make a retraction of that statement?

My guess is you should get a good teacher or perhaps if you're not just exagerating limit yourself to, I dunno, 500 hours before deciding if you like an opening or not.  Or perhaps you could just limit yourself to 250 hours, or perhaps 125 hours...now we're getting somewhere.  Oy. Get a life.

For the future I suggest you don't keep your hand in your pants when "studying" an opening.

Where's the fun in that?

abhiraj42

The game whatever, is great and must be looked on by every chess player.

I don't know what will happen in the match, but it looks like the forum thread is sure to gather tons and tons of nonsense.

You're not seriously suggesting the grunfeld is unsound though are you?  I mean, it was used as recently as... the first game of the 2010 WC match.  Or maybe you knew something Anand and his team didn't because you've lost so often as black in it :P

I also seriously doubt you've spent thousands of hours on it :) that's what, 4-5 years unless you have a huge amount of dedication and free time to get it done faster.

kco

Hey there anyone, where can I find the script from the press conference after the first game ?

orangehonda

10 hours a day for 10 years!  I admire your dedication Smile

orangehonda

I've had weeks off before where I think to myself, ok, I'm going to try and do __ number of hours each day (and make it something really high like 8)... but to be honest I don't think I could do 10 hours a day for a week straight... after 2-3 days I'd be burnt out and I'd take a day off Cool

ok this is not relevant but ive studied chess for about 10 hours a day for over 10 years. a lot of that was openings.

The grunfeld was my exclusive defense against 1d4. Im not saying the opening is 'unsound'....overall my result where pretty good....but I did always know that there were some lines that were simply terrifying for black and they could not be avoided. I tried a lot of computer crunching on them and never found happy solutions. Usually just crossed my fingers and hoped white didnt paly them. In fact some lines i thought i had figured out where messed up by none other than topolov!

The opening is fine theoretically but its very hard practically in some situations. Its well suited for someone who can defend like the HAL 9000. Mortals will have a hard time.

And yet you are still a C class player ?!!  WOW !!  I wouldn't admit I had spent that much time studying chess seriously with such poor results !  You are certainly brave !

Anyway, for all you gruenfeld fans I wouldnt worry about some C class player claiming its unsound, he has no credentials, afterall.  The fact that both Fischer and Kasparov played it often is good enough for me !

so we see that grandmasters are no exception to practical chess blindness and oversight and the breaking of chess principles anad had his rook not conected and his bishop was in their way. and he thought he could defend the king by moving him around simple bishop to d7 was all that matters he had a pawn majority on the queen side and a passed pawn. simple stategy activate the heavy pieces and exchange down to increase the advantage. karpov or krmnik would have loved to play anand position prior to the knight sac. maybe me

No kidding.

23... Bb7 or 23... Bd7 both seemed like decent moves, which in no way lost Anand the game. Shame neither of them were played.

I asked a Candidate Master about that, and he reccomended the same 2 moves!
He had no idea why Anand would even play ...Kf7. It does free up the rook and queen, but he couldn't believe Anand missed Nxf6.

Anand is still gonna win tho Laughing

After that pawn sac, Topalov had a small advantage anyway. The Grunfeld is unsound.
