@OP If you are happy at part time chess teaching/ coaching, your present chess level is ok. If you are dreaming as a a professional coach, better fees, you should work hard for an NM title. NM is not an impossible dream

Yep...but whatever he decides...be realistic.  A few years ago this kid (1600 at the time) shows up at a tournament, and starts telling me how he wants to be a professional chess coach.  I asked him what his rating is, and he says its in the 1600's.  I said sure, you can coach at that level, as long as you explains things well.  He asked how much should be charge?  I gave him my opinion, and he says...Oh...I was  thinking of charging $100/Hour.  You can figure out the rest...

Thank you all for your answers. Another thought I had is the fact that the overwhelming majority of the listed coaches on the site are titled. I'm thinking about applying for a coaching slot, and I wonder if Chess.com would accept me or not due to my low ratings.

I don't see any other reason they should not accept me... except for maybe my lack of professional coaching experience.

You will have to fill out the application, but i see no reason they wont accept you.  There are MANY untitled players that coach here.

Really? Some random dude who thought he could be world champion and says to only study openings? I'm not buying it.

I started a group for Amateur Chess Coaches. Feel free to join if you are in the same boat as me. happy.png Please note that it is NOT going to be a competitive environment among coaches.

Indeed.

Pep Suárez, a Senior FIDE Trainer who coached Francisco Vallejo on his early years, once told me that the best scholastic coach he knows (and he's travelled all around the world) is a 1600 FIDE.

Hey guys.

As many of you may know, my goal is to one day get to National Master (2200 USCF), and I would love to become a professional chess coach... or at least do some coaching on the side.

I feel that it would really help if I got a title, however, I'm not entirely sure if I will end up getting the master title. I'm still not giving up that dream, though it would take a lot of work to get there. My peak is 1828 USCF (Class A nationally), though it has plummeted since.

I currently have four regular local students. Two are 400-700, my others are 1300-1400. I'm curious if there are very many successful coaches out there who do not have a title? In my opinion, I think you should be able to get students if you present/advertise yourself well and are consistent with your teaching, even if you are a strong untitled player.

I could be wrong though. I know there isn't a textbook answer or formula for this, though feel free to discuss and debate. Thanks!

I'm an untitled scrub that coaches.  I have been blessed with the ability to explain things so pretty much anyone can understand it.  I know guys that are titled players, and cant coach there way out of a wet paper bag.  Like you, I am a former A player.  Absolutely you can coach, and coach well, as long as you have the ability to explain things so its easily understandable.

I work with a couple of guys on Fridays teaching chess.  There is a kid that is roughly 1800 USCF, and he cant teach worth a lick.  One night he was going all in depth on the theory of the Sicilian dragon to someone that knew how the pieces move, and thats it.

Know your audience.

If you're working with kids, know how long they can pay attention.  If their eyes start wondering, you have either lost them, or they are bored.

Keep the explanations simple.  Trying to coach someone is the wrong time to try and sound important.

Keep the lessons at an appropriate level.  Always be willing to push them out of their comfort zone, but don't overwhelm them.

"I think you are not understanding."

RAR, and with you honing in on the NM title, we might not even consider you an "Amatuer" Coach.

I would coach but there are a few things that will happen/might happen and I think it would probably also happen to you...

1. coaching arguably makes your chess worse, therefore worsens your chances of becoming master.

2. Some players may just disregard you because your a kid, and most of the times kids probably aren't that good at teaching.

3. In the end, life will catch up with you. You want to become a coach, but also study chess at the same time, it is possible but in the end probably you will become to busy to do one of them and you would have to give it up
