I'm trying to get my chessbase games on a tablet. The tablet app needs games in .pgn  All of my games on fritz 13 are on .cbv and apparently can be changed to .pgn.

Any idea on how to do that within fritz 13. thx.

This link tells you how to do the opposite of what you want, but it may be useful anyway (maybe you can reverse the procedure)

Using search engines is usually faster (and often more accurate) to get answers http://www.cln.org/searching_faqs.html/

I don't have Fritz 13 but it's probably the same as it is in Fritz 12.  Unfortunately, I'm at work and I don't have Fritz 12 here with me now.

Basically, you want to look for an "export to PGN" menu or feature, or "save games as pgn"... something like that.  (It definitely IS do-able... I've done it before.)

I've also seen outside converstion programs that can read the Chessbase (cbv) format, and convert the games to a PGN format.  However, conversion program this is usually just used by those who don't have Fritz/ChessBase.  Since you do, it would be best just to learn how to convert/save them in the PGN format from the program itself.

Fritz 12:

1) Create a new database, but instead of setting the database to be a CBV file, set the database as a PGN file.

The database will, of course, be empty.

2) Copy and paste the games from your CBV database to your PGN database.  Select them all at once (CTRL-A), and then copy them all to memory (CTRL-C), and then switch over the the empty pgn database and paste (CTRL-V) them in.

I assume the steps are identical, or nearly identical, with Fritz 13.

I have an older copy of Fritz. My method is different.

Open the Fritz database window.

Open the Fritz database.

Right click on a game.

Edit

Select All.

Right click again in the selected area.

Output.

Selection To Textfile...

Format

PGN

OK

Give the pgn file a path and a name, and save it.

Done. Maybe it works the same in Fritz 13? Give it a try and let us know!

That worked great. One problem though. The file came up with the Microsoft Word logo on it. I then tried to transfer via SD card to both a tablet where it didnt' work with the chessbase app and also to pocket fritz where some worked and some didn't.

Any ideas why it has the microsoft word logo on it. I wouldn't want to open the .pgn file in word?

Probably, until you tell it otherwise, your system believes that files with a ".pgn" extension should be opened up with Microsoft Word.  They can be, of course, since Word can handle opening up text files, but I wouldn't use Word for this for these types of files.  I would use the wonderful TextPad program (my choice) followed by other ascii text editors.  (NotePad, for example).

If you right-click any pgn file via Windows Explorer and select OPEN WITH and then choose NotePad (for example) as the default file to open this type of file with, and also check the box marked "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" the Windows MS Word logo will go away, and will be replaced by the NotePad (in this example) logo.

Not sure at all why you had problems in transferring from an SD card to a tablet or to pocket fritz.  I'm not familiar with tablets or Pocket Fritz, but a file transfer should be a simple file transfer and shouldn't have a problem.

HristoProtos

right click on a game and go Output => Selection to Text File and you are done! Took me also some time to find it out but is v.simple ;)

That works fine but I need to put into a pocket fritz or the chessbase app for ipad or android on the sd card. The tablet reads from the sd card in .pgn.

When I do what HristoProtos mentioned I get a default .pgn which I can choose. Mentioned earlier notepad could be used. I have been changing around. Notepad, Microsoft Word, ect. Question: Could I use chessbase .pgn and if so where is that located. I keep getting corrupted data when plugging into my pocket pc  and ipad.

Should this work on ipad I have megadatabase and would then be able to put that in .pgn onto my chessbase tablet app.

We can only guess what's causing the corrupted data message. It looks like you may have to shift into troubleshooting mode.

Maybe the pgn file you're trying to transfer is too big? Try exporting just a few games and see if you can get a small pgn file to transfer.

Maybe there's some Fritz annotations in the pgn file that the handheld unit is choking on. You could download "Jim's PGN Cleanup Toolkit v1.4" from Jim Ablett's web site. ( http://jimablett.net63.net/ ) This utility can automatically strip out everything but the tags and moves from the pgn file, but you'll have to be proficient with command line utilities. Try creating a small pgn of just a few games, then use the Cleanup utility to strip out the annotations. If you can't get the cleanup utility to work, you could always delete the annotations manually with a text editor, but it would probably help to be familiar with the general structure of a pgn file.

I would add to above by saying if you want to convert a whole file click on "select all" and then copy and paste.

MrEdCollins

I agree with EscherehcsE.  First, make a very small, two or three game PGN file and attempt your process with that.  If that works, then you know it might have something to with the size of the file.

Also, maybe it's obvious, but if not, be sure your pgn file is an ascii text file, and not a binary file.  Just because it has a .pgn extenion, doesn't guarantee it's an ascii text file!

Alright: Thanks for all the help. Got My games onto my android chessbase app. Also I can put part of the megadatabase games onto the tablet and read commentaries directly from the app.

Much appreciated!!!
